Supplemental Instruction Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a free, voluntary academic assistance program offering regularly scheduled, out of class, student led study sessions for students enrolled in SI supported courses at UAB. SI helps students succeed in difficult courses because well trained student leaders who have the support and cooperation of faculty engage participants in collaborative learning activities. SI also teaches students to develop problem solving, communication, and critical thinking skills that foster their academic success on an ongoing basis. What would be learned?: Collaborative teaching techniques, development of session plans, communication and leadership skills, ability to present information before large groups, development of student/faculty relationships, organizational skills, working with a diverse student population, working with peers. How many students are needed?: There are approximately 1-2 openings for student leaders for PY 101 each term. Minimum commitment: 8-10 hours/week. Student leaders attend lectures, plan and conduct sessions, meet with professors, attend staff meetings on a regular basis and observe sessions of other leaders. Minimum terms needed: 1 term; this opportunity is ongoing. Contact supervisor: Barbara Morgan Contact phone: 934-5897 Contact email: btmorgan@uab.edu SI web site: www.uab.edu/si |
