Psi Chi is the National Honor Society in Psychology.  It seeks to advance the science of psychology and to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship. Membership in Psi Chi is open to majors and minors in psychology who have completed at least 9 hours of psychology courses, and 45 hours of college-level coursework.  Students must have Psychology, UAB, and cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher. 

The local chapter of Psi Chi serves as a forum for social interactions with other psychology students and with faculty, as well as for discussions of student research, preparation for graduate school, and career development. In addition, Psi Chi membership is a way of recognizing students with excellent academic records.

Psi Chi is an organization of students. It is led by undergraduate officers (President, Vice President of Finance, Vice President of Administration, Vice President of Communications, and Vice President of Philanthropy) who are elected yearly by the Psi Chi membership.  Dr. Christopher Robinson and Dr. Maria Hopkins serve as the faculty advisors to Psi Chi at UAB, although other faculty may be involved as well.

The UAB Chapter of Psi Chi was founded in 1993.  Historically, Psi Chi has supported the following activities:

1. a speaker's forum for invited guests who can provide additional perspective on various fields in psychology.

2. informal student-faculty social, intellectual, and professional exchange.

3. dissemination of information concerning graduate and professional school opportunities, careers in psychology, clerkships, research positions, seminars, scientific meetings, etc.

4. an opportunity for students to have a voice in departmental affairs.

5. social activities within the department.

Letters are sent to all UAB students eligible to join Psi Chi at the end of each spring and fall semester. Current eligibility criteria include 45 semester hours at the undergraduate level, 9 of which are in psychology. Students must also have a 3.0 GPA both overall and in psychology courses.  For information, please contact the psychology advisors.
